Scar Center

Scar Center
Acne, surgical, burn, and traumatic scars can be disfiguring and symptomatic. Scars can cause burning, pain and itch. There are many ways to treat the different types of scar tissue. At Southside Dermatology, we offer medical, surgical and laser treatments for scars. We evaluate every patient on an individual basis. We will formulate a plan to optimize your scar revision.

Lasers have a tremendous impact in the treatment of scars. At Southside Dermatology, we have the latest laser technology to treat all aspects of the scar.
  • Vbeam Perfecta laser (Pulse Dye Laser)
  • Fraxel DUAL laser (Fraxel Restore and Thulium)
  • CO2RE fractioned CO2 laser

Acne Scars

There are many different types of acne scars. Classic acne scars are deep pits (“ice pick scars”), angular scars (“boxcar scars”), or undulating scars (“rolling scars”). Because each patient is unique, there are many treatments available to treat acne scars. Patients may require a combination of treatments for the best results. Let us evaluate the type of scars that you have to optimize your results.

Acne scar treatments available at Southside Dermatology include:
  • surgical revision and excision
  • TCA peel, intralesional or topical therapy
  • Dermal fillers
  • Genesis laser treatments (several treatments, no downtime)
  • Vbeam Perfecta laser (especially for redness and thickened red scars)
  • Fraxel Restore non-ablative laser resurfacing
  • CO2RE CO2 fractionated ablative laser resurfacing
If you still have active acne, we can provide effective prescription medications and adjunctive therapies including extractions, facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and photodynamic treatments.

Surgical/Traumatic/Keloid Scars

Normal wound healing results in a flat and flexible scar. Keloids, hypertrophic, and atrophic scars are the primary types of pathologic scars. Multiple factors including a patient’s age, race, the anatomic location, and type of trauma or injury may lead to the development of a pathological scar. Wound healing is a very complex process and results can be variable. Contrary to previous dogma, some scars are being treated earlier to affect the collagen remodeling process to help prevent thickened and red scars.

The Vbeam Perfecta laser is a pulse dye laser that has been shown in multiple studies to clinically improve hypertrophic and keloidal scars. Improvements were demonstrated in scar redness, height, texture, pliability, and pruritus. The Vbeam is best for red scars.

The CO2RE laser is a revolutionary fractionated carbon dioxide laser used to treat any type of scars. Even thickened, complex scars will respond to treatment. Microscopic columns of abnormal scar tissue are ablated and extruded, leaving bridges of intact skin to aid in regenerating new collagen. This new collagen remodeling will result in healthier skin.

The Fraxel DUAL laser has two modes (1550 nm Restore and 1927 nm Thulium). The Thulium laser works well for superficial pigmented scars and the Restore laser is a non-ablative fractionated laser that is very effective in treating all scars without downtime. This laser is FDA approved for all skin types.

Adjunctive treatments to lasers can include surgical revisions, dermal fillers, and topical steroids or immunomodulators to improve the appearance of the scar. Combination scar gels may also be effective.

Stretch Marks (Striae)

Stretch marks are actually a form of dermal scars as the results of abnormal healing of your collagen and elastin tissue. They occur mostly in areas of mechanical stress such as the abdomen, breasts, thighs, or buttocks. They can start out as pink, reddish brown, brown, or dark brown and fade over time to become white or silver, often with indentations.

Red or purple stretch marks respond the best to treatment. The Vbeam Perfecta laser can be very effective because it targets the inflamed and swollen vessels and helps stimulate collagen.

Older, white and silvery stretch marks can be treated with the fractioned non- ablative Fraxel Restore laser or the fractioned CO2RE laser. These lasers stimulate collagen breakdown and new collagen formation. This remodeling under the scar helps it more closely resemble the surrounding normal skin.
